We are seeking outstanding students to pursue PhD (1) and MSc (1) degrees in Wildlife Ecology, programs housed in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology (FWE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Thesis research will involve using bioacoustics to monitor the response of populations of spotted owls, other focal species, and biological communities in rapidly changing California forests. The research will leverage acoustic data being collected at regional spatial scales (millions of acres) and likely involve additional survey work to be developed as part of the students’ program.

The student will be co-advised by Dr. Zach Peery (http://peery.russell.wisc.edu) at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Dr. Connor Wood (https://connormwood.com) at the K. Lisa Yang Center of Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Funding is currently pending; if awarded, students will be funded primarily through Research Assistantships over the course of their programs.

Applicants for the MSc position must possess a bachelor’s degree in wildlife, conservation biology, ecology, or closely related field, whereas applicants for the PhD position much possess an MSc in one of these fields. Applicants for both positions must have demonstrated quantitative and writing skills. We particularly encourage applicants from underrepresented groups including people of every gender, ethnicity, race, skin color, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, age, and other identities.

To be considered for one these positions, please send a cover letter outlining your interests and research background, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for three professional references (name, email, phone, address) as either a PDF or MS Word file to mpeery@wisc.edu.

The successful applicants are expected to enroll at the UW-Madison in the Fall Semester of 2023. More details on the graduate programs can be found at http://forestandwildlifeecology.wisc.edu/graduate-overview. Application materials will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found.
