The Perlut Lab in the School of Marine and Environmental Programs at the University of New England is recruiting one student (MS in Biological Sciences) interested in movement/migration ecology of grassland songbirds. Field work for this project will be based at the Hudson Valley Farm Hub in Hurley, NY, and will focus on the movement ecology (via geolocators and Argos satellite tags) of this small, newly established and isolated population of Bobolinks and Savannah Sparrows, which we have studied since 2021. Analyses will include the opportunity to compare the NY population with our long-term study population (2002-current) of the same two species breeding in Shelburne, VT. There are a number of fascinating simultaneously ongoing ecology projects at the Hub, all based out of the Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program.
Qualifications: Candidates should have significant field experience with songbirds (not necessarily grassland birds), including nest searching and netting/banding skills. Experience deploying tracking devices and resighting color banded birds is great but not required. Candidates should have strong writing skills, academic or professional experience in GIS/spatial analyses, academic experience with statistics, and a BS or BA in a relevant field.
Funding: This position includes a $20,000 stipend and full tuition waiver.
State date: This project will start with fieldwork ~1 May 2025 in Hurley, NY.
If you are interested in this opportunity, email Noah Perlut (nperlut@une.edu), including a letter of interest and background, CV and names of three relevant references.
