Job Description: I am seeking two (2) M.S. candidates with a strong interest and with an academic and field research background in avian ecology to conduct field research on the Cerulean Warbler, a species of conservation concern.  Student’s thesis topic will align with the primary research objective of determining Cerulean Warbler reproductive response to timber harvest treatments in two southern Indiana state forests.  Students will survey Cerulean Warblers using point-counts, intensively search for and monitor nests, measure vegetation characteristics, and potentially extract blood for genetic analyses.  Field work begins from end April/early May 2022 to approximately the end of July 2022.  Student may need to use personal vehicle in the field and will be eligible for mileage reimbursement; therefore, a ‘clean’ driving record is required.

Qualifications: B.S. in wildlife science, ecology or closely related biological field with a minimum GPA of 3.00 and competitive GRE scores.  Candidate must have strong aural and visual bird identification skills, field experience with bird survey methods, and navigational skills using handheld GPS unit.  Position requires strong observational skills, strong oral and written communications skills, attention to detail, and ability to work well with others on a small research team and independently with minimum supervision.  Must have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, willingness and ability to work long hours in the field beginning from sunrise, and the ability to hike through steep and uneven terrain carrying field equipment in hot, humid weather.  Valid driver’s license required.  Preference will be given to applicant with field experience studying migratory songbirds, finding nests in high canopy forests, and extensive experience mist netting and banding birds.

Please send a letter discussing your research interests, relevant experience, and career goals, CV/resume, college transcripts, GRE Scores, and the names and contact information for 3 references.  Please e-mail this information as one (1) electronic document to Dr. Kamal Islam at kislam@bsu.edu  with “M.S. Graduate Student for Fall 2022” in the subject line.

Salary:  Graduate Teaching Assistantship available on a competitive basis.  Shared housing is provided during the field season.  A weekly stipend for field work during the summer will be provided.

Last Date to apply: The position will close on December 31st 2021 or as soon as two (2) suitable candidates are found.
