The Bird Genoscape Project (BGP) at Colorado State University (CSU) seeks an ambitious, resourceful, highly skilled, and flexible professional to serve as an Associate Director of the BGP and assist CSU’s BGP Faculty Director, Dr. Kristen Ruegg, in carrying out and helping grow and manage its research program. In collaboration with a network of prominent scientists from a diversity of disciplines and backgrounds, the BGP employs novel applications and uses the latest technologies, ranging from satellite imagery to genomics. The BGP’s mission is to: 1) create comprehensive, visually impactful, migratory flyway maps for birds that can be used to motivate conservation efforts across geographic and political boundaries, 2) map the potential for bird populations to adapt to climate change, 3) interface with NGO’s and government agencies who can use the resulting data to help inform conservation efforts. The BGP also provides important training opportunities for young scientists and decision-makers from across the Latin America. Overall, this position offers an opportunity for an early- to mid-career professional to work closely with the BGP director to help build and grow an exciting, conservation-minded research program. The Associate Director will serve as the chief operating officer of the BGP, reporting to the CSU Director and will have overall operational responsibility for various aspects of BGP including proposal writing, development of budgets, liaising with research administration colleagues, communicating with partners across the western hemisphere, long range planning, educational programs, and research activities. The Associate Director will participate with the Director in strategic planning, program innovation, new initiatives, and growing and managing governance and advisory boards.
The successful candidate should have:
· Outstanding organizational and management skills
· Experience working at the national and/or international level, either in the public or private sectors.
· Spanish language skills preferred
· Ability to balance competing demands, prioritize work, and communicate about workflow clearly and succinctly
· Experience managing budgets
· Strong critical thinking skills and good attention to detail
· Excellent written and oral communication skills
· Experience with proposal writing
· Experience or interest in growing and managing governing and advisory boards
· Experience in monitoring and evaluation, educational programming, and/or research strongly preferred
· An undergraduate and/or advance degree in ecology, biology, or a related natural science
· Experience working at a university a plus
Start date and duration: Preferred start date is as soon as possible, but is open to negotiation; Initially, the appointment will be for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of extending it to 2 years or more dependent upon performance and the availability of funds.
