    The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) at Iowa State University is recruiting an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Wildlife Ecology. The position is a 9-month appointment and has responsibilities in research (45%), teaching (45%), and service (10%). 

    The candidate will develop an externally-funded research program in wildlife ecology. Potential areas of emphasis might include but are not limited to community ecology, conservation biology, habitat management, population ecology, and wildlife in urban or agricultural landscapes. Mentoring graduate students in research is expected. The candidate will teach two required undergraduate courses in the Animal Ecology major’s Wildlife option curriculum (Ecological Methods and Wildlife Ecology & Management), a portion of a required sophomore Animal Ecology introductory course (Principles of Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation), and a graduate course to be determined by their particular expertise and departmental needs. The candidate will provide service to NREM, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Iowa State University, and the profession. All three responsibilities (research, teaching and service) will require the successful candidate to have excellent oral and written communication skills. Successful candidates must be committed to working with diverse students, staff, and stakeholders.     Required Minimum Qualifications:

    Ph.D. or equivalent in wildlife ecology or a closely related field by the hire date

     

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Peer-reviewed publication record in wildlife ecology or closely related field

    Experience conducting applied research that informs wildlife (amphibian, avian, mammal, reptile) conservation and/or management

    Post-doctoral experience

    Experience teaching at the college level

    Experience supervising/mentoring staff and/or students conducting research

    Demonstrated experience writing grants and obtaining external funding support for research activities

    Experience supporting efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in an academic community through research, teaching, and/or service

     

    Department, Program & College Description:

    The NREM Department is housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which is dedicated to the Land Grant missions of teaching, research, and extension. The Department is broad in scope, with ~400 undergraduate students in Animal Ecology, ~100 students in Forestry, and >50 graduate students in Fisheries Biology, Forestry, and Wildlife Ecology or in Interdepartmental Graduate Programs in which NREM faculty are affiliated. The department houses the U.S. Geological Survey’s Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. In addition to on-campus facilities for teaching and research, NREM manages the Rod and Connie French Conservation Camp in western Montana as well as an aviary and artificial ponds ~8 miles north of the main ISU campus.
