Description

The Chettih Lab at Yale University is hiring a Lab Associate to join a new research program studying the neural basis of memory in food-caching birds. Black-capped chickadees hide thousands of food items each fall and recover them weeks to months later — an extraordinary memory feat that makes them a powerful system for understanding how the brain stores and retrieves episodic-like memories.

This is a hybrid field-and-lab position. The Lab Associate will spend the fall and winter mist-netting and banding wild chickadees at field sites in Connecticut, and will work year-round in the New Haven lab caring for the captive colony and supporting behavioral and neurobiological experiments. In selecting candidates we weigh previous experience more heavily than formal degrees.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated experience capturing and handling wild birds, particularly with mist nets

Valid US driver's license and willingness to drive between New Haven and field sites, including transporting live animals

Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize effectively

Ability to work well in a small team, take initiative independently in the field, and contribute to the lab's broader research goals

	About the lab:

The Chettih Lab is a new systems neuroscience lab at Yale focused on the neural mechanisms of memory, with chickadees as the primary model. Our work combines naturalistic behavior, large-scale neural recordings, and computational modeling. The Lab Associate role is central to the lab — both the captive colony and the field program depend on this position — and offers substantial scope for the right person to grow into more technical and scientific responsibilities over time.

To apply:

Submit your application for this position through Yale’s official portal: https://careers.yale.edu/us/en/job/YUCYUHUS134336WDEXTERNALENUS/Avian-Lab-Associate

Description: I am seeking a research assistant to help establish a field camp at Anderson Bay on Victoria Island, Nunavut, Canada to study the population ecology of lesser snow geese and Ross’s geese. I anticipate the research assistant will plan all aspects of the field season, including logistics (e.g., equipment and food orders) and experimental design. There also will be opportunities to study other Arctic ecosystem components, such as sea ducks. This is a new camp but a continuation of data collection that started at the Karrak Lake research station in 1991, thus we anticipate similar protocols will be used for comparable data. The research assistant will be based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and will join the field crew at Anderson Bay annually during June-July, beginning in 2026. I anticipate the research assistant will lead on data summarization and analysis, report writing, and communication to funders and collaborators during the non-field season. The research assistant also will have substantial opportunities to mentor graduate students in the Weegman lab. This is initially a two-year term position, with anticipated continuation for long-term research.

This camp is an international partnership among the Arctic Goose Joint Venture, Polar Knowledge Canada, Central Flyway Council, Mississippi Flyway Council and Canadian Wildlife Service.

§ Recent experience in field work in wildlife biology or ecology, ideally with an emphasis on Arctic or northern systems and migratory birds.

§ MSc in biology or ecology

§ Current First Aid certification and familiarity with firearms, outboard motors, and navigation.

§ Demonstrated ability to organize logistics and plan and coordinate work crews and teams.

§ Ability to acquire materials used for field work.

§ Ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively, both orally and in writing.

§ Comfortable in a variety of conditions (cold/snowy, hot/buggy) and with moderate physical exercise (walking 10 – 15 km per day).

Salary and benefits: $80,000 Canadian per year plus benefits
