Laura Bies Posted November 4 Posted November 4 The latest update to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species includes reclassifying 16 species of migratory shorebirds across the globe to higher threat categories. Overall, 145 bird species’ global extinction risk categories changed in the 2024-2 Red List update. While most of these changes reflect real improvements from conservation measures or real deteriorations from increased threats, some are ‘non-genuine’ changes, reflecting new information that was not available in previous assessments. Among the migratory shorebirds that were reclassified, 14 have undergone genuine deteriorations since 1988 (the time of the first comprehensive Red List assessments of birds), while two other species were most likely already in decline. Read a press release from Bird Life International and learn more about the listed birds here.
