Call for Nominations
2021 Society of Canadian Ornithologists’ Early Career Research Award

https://www.sco-soc.ca/ecr

In honour of AOS & SCO-SOC 2021 Virtual Meeting theme, “Birds of many feathers flock together”, the Society of Canadian Ornithologists–Société de Ornithologistes du Canada (SCO–SOC) is awarding a unique Early Career Researcher award in 2021.

This award recognizes early career professionals and researchers from Mexico, South America, Central America, or the Caribbean, or professionals based in Canada who are working on species from one of these regions, who have made exceptional contributions to the study of birds, to the conservation of birds and their habitats, and/or to the professional development of the next generation of ornithologists.

To be eligible, the professional ornithologist should have obtained their PhD no more than five years prior to the meeting or be at a similar career stage, if pursuing a career in ornithology without a PhD. The window of eligibility can be extended if the applicant had their professional career interrupted or delayed. Individuals may self-nominate.

We strongly encourage the nomination of individuals who self-identify as members of a minority or minoritized group(s), especially Black, Indigenous, and Brown ornithologists, and their intersectional identities. Nominees do not need to be in a Canadian institution to apply.

The award will be presented to the recipient at the AOS & SCO-SOC 2021 Virtual Meeting, where they will be invited to give a 20-minute plenary talk. The recipient will also be asked to provide a synopsis of their work to appear as a multi-page colour feature in the SCO–SOC’s newsletter, Picoides. SCO-SOC will subsidize the awardee’s registration cost to participate in the AOS & SCO-SOC 2021 Virtual Meeting.

Nominations must include the following information about the nominee:

  • Name, E-mail, nationality and professional affiliation
  • Years since PhD
  • CV of the nominee
  • A brief justification (max 500 words) of the nomination according to the award description

Please send nominations and questions to Letícia Soares via email ldesou2@uwo.ca, with the subject “SCO-SOC ECR Award Nomination”. Nominations will be accepted until March 10, 2021.

We welcome and offer support in preparing and reviewing self-nominations, including assistance to those who speak English as a second language. If you need help preparing your self-nomination, please contact Cesar Estevo via email estevo@ualberta.ca with the subject "ECRA Nomination Assistance".
