Melanie Colón
'Time series models for Ecologists (TSME01)'This course will run from 26th - 30th June 2017 at Northwest AtlanticFisheries Centre, St. John’s , Canada. This course wil be delivered by Dr. Andrew ParnellCourse Overview:This course will cover time series analysis with a particular focus onapplications in ecology. All methods will be illustrated using the free,open-source software package R. Time Series data are ubiquitous in thephysical sciences, and models for their behaviour enable scientists tounderstand temporal dynamics and predict future values. Participants willbe taught a wide range of suitable time series models for both discrete andcontinuous time systems. The course will cover a range of techniques fromsimple exponential smoothing and ARIMA modelling approaches up to complexBayesian models. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of themodels being fitted, and be able interpret the results appropriately.Participants are encouraged to bring their own data sets for discussionwith the course tutors.Day 1Class 1: Introduction, example data setsClass 2: Revision: likelihood and inferenceClass 3: Revision: linear regression, GLMs, and exponential smoothingTutor-guided practical: Linear regression GLMs and exponential smoothingfor time seriesSelf-guided practical: Analysing some example data setsDay 2Class 1: Auto-regressive models and random walksClass 2: Moving averages and ARMAClass 3: Integrated models and ARIMATutor-guided practical: The forecast package in RSelf-guided practical: Fitting ARIMA models with forecastDay 3Class 1: Including covariates: ARIMAX modelsClass 2: Model choice and forecastingClass 3: Creating bespoke time series models using BayesTutor-guided practical: A walkthrough example time series analysisSelf-guided practical: Finding the best time series model for your data setDay 4Class 1: Modelling with seasonality and the frequency domainClass 2: Stochastic volatility models and heteroskedasticityClass 3: Fitting Bayesian time series modelsTutor-guided practical: Fitting time series models in StanSelf-guided practical: Start analysing your own data setDay 5Class 1: Models for continuous time series: Brownian Motion and OrnstienUhlenbeck processesClass 2: State-space and change point modelsClass 3: Multivariate time series models and co-integrationOpen session: analyse your own dataPlease email any inquiries to oliverhooker@prstatistics.com or visit ourwebsite www.prstatistics.comPlease feel free to distribute this material anywhere you feel is suitableOur other courses1.
