Conservation groups buying coastal habitat to protect whooping cranes

CORPUS CHRISTI — Hundreds of acres of coastal property is being snatched up in an attempt to protect endangered whooping cranes.

 

After years of eyeing Big Tree Ranch, a critical habitat for whooping cranes next to Goose Island State Park, Texas Parks and Wildlife is preparing to take ownership of the 78-acre property. An oil spill settlement is providing the $2 million to buy the ranch.
