AOU News Update: new executive director begins work today and other news

Hello AOU Members –

It is my great pleasure to welcome our new Executive Director, Melinda-Pruett Jones, to her new position this week. While today is her first official day of work, Melinda has been working on AOU issues since January. I cannot tell you how fortunate we are to have her join our leadership team. Melinda will be housed at the Field Museum in Chicago and you can reach her via this email address: aouexec@aou.org.

In other news, the AOU Council will meet in Chicago next week for a strategic planning session. Happily, we have completed many of the tasks outlined in the various task force reports developed over the past year. Thus we are looking ahead to the next 3-5 years. Please let me know if you have any ideas for new projects or initiatives that you would like AOU to investigate.

Our new initiatives are moving along:

· The website committee lead by Carla Cicero is working closely with the designer and the new design for AmericanOrnithology.org is looking spectacular! We hope we can shut down our current site in early summer.

· Plans for our upcoming meeting at Estes Park include inaugural events for the newly formed ROU: Retired Ornithologists’ Union! Retirees, please read the forthcoming registration information to be able to participate in the special events, etc. planned for you. Thanks to Anne Bartuszevige and Kate Huyvaert for organizing the events.

· Mike Butler and the EPC’s (Early Professional Committee) have special events planned for the Estes Park meeting. Contact Mike if you’d like to help in any of this committees activities:butlermw@lafayette.edu

· You may recall the History Committee was videotaping AOU award winners, former presidents and other “famous ornithologists” at the Chicago meeting. They are now working to expand the program to include many more interviews by having people use iphones to conduct the interviews. Please contact Ashley Long (ashley_long@neo.tamu.edu) if you’d like to help. These videos will be loaded onto the AOU YouTube channel later this spring. There will be a link to them via the evolving AOU/COS website AmericanOrnithology.org.

Susan Skagen and her local committee have really great plans for our meeting in Estes Park (24-27 September). Please reserve the dates as a meeting at the YMCA of the Rockies is not to be missed!

Have a great week,

Susan Haig
