For those who don't know, 2014 marks the centenary of the death of the last Passenger Pigeon. Greenberg, David Blockstein (one of the founders and long-time chair of the Ornithological Council), and others are coordinating activities throughout the year, with over 160 participating institutions providing a wide range of events for children and adults across the country.

Project Passenger Pigeon's goals are to:

 

a) familiarize people in North America and beyond with the passenger pigeon and its extinction

b) explore how human activity impacts other species

c) motivate people to take actions that both promote biodiversity and prevent human-caused extinctions
