Salim Ali (1896-1987), the Grand Old Man of Indian Ornithology, was among the first Indians to conduct systematic bird surveys in the country. His books have contributed enormously to the development of professional and amateur ornithology in India.

    S. Dillon Ripley (1913-2001) was an American ornithologist and wildlife conservationist. He developed a lifelong interest in birds after a trip to India at the age of 13. He obtained a Ph.D in zoology from Harvard University in 1943 and later served as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution for 20 years.
