The Maui and Keauhou Bird Conservation Centers are seeking motivated Research Assistants to conduct daily husbandry and conservation breeding activities for endangered Hawaiian birds. These non-profit centers on Maui and Hawai‘i Island have been breeding and releasing endangered Hawaiian birds for 20 years, and play a key role in the ‘alalā reintroduction.
Responsibilities include managing reproduction in breeding pairs; observing and recording reproductive and social behaviors as part of an ongoing research project on mate choice; conducting artificial incubation and hand-rearing; assisting with veterinary care; preparing and provisioning food; cleaning and perching aviaries; detailed record keeping; entering and managing data; maintaining aviaries, facilities, equipment, and grounds; and other duties as assigned.
The successful applicant will have some of the following qualifications: a Bachelor's degree in any of the animal sciences; experience collecting data for a research project involving animal behavior or ecology; practical skills and experience that are useful for aviary and facility maintenance; at least two years experience working with birds in an institutional position while responsible for bird care; familiarity with artificial incubation and hand-rearing of passerines; valid drivers license and in good standing with the DMV. Selected candidate must be able to identify diversed colored identification tags on birds.
Salary is commensurate with experience for this full time position.
