Northern Goshawk Crew Leader & Field Technicians


The BC Conservation Foundation is seeking a competent crew lead (1) and field technicians (2) to support field surveys and monitoring of Northern Goshawks in Coastal British Columbia. Under the guidance of the experienced Crew Lead (BCCF staff, sub-contractors and/or biologists working with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations), the right candidates can look forward to conducting call playback surveys and habitat assessments in the south and central mainland coast of BC. The position is based in Surrey, BC with travel to remote survey locations.We are looking for candidates with the following skills and qualifications:

  • Enrolment or completion of a post-secondary degree in biology or equivalent
  • Considerable field experience in remote locations and challenging terrain
  • Physically fit
  • Safety minded
  • Observant / good attention to detail
  • Extremely flexible schedule and full availability from May 23rd through August 18th, 2017 (schedule TBD, contingent upon weather and budget)
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license
  • Current OFA Level 1 First Aid
  • Comfortable with back-country camping in remote locations
  • Comfortable with traveling and living on a boat
  • Comfortable with helicopter travel
  • Bear aware
  • Strong map, compass, and navigation / orienteering skills
  • Experience with driving 4x4 trucks on gravel / off-roads / forestry roads in all weather conditions
Strong Asset Qualifications include:
  • Previous work with Northern Goshawks, call-play back surveys, or other raptors (strongly preferred for the Crew Leader Position)
  • Local experience working in the coastal forests of British Columbia
  • Wilderness First Aid
  • ATV certificate
  • Knowledge of the plants, animals, and ecosystems of coastal BC
  • GIS skills and knowledge of GIS software
  • Bird identification by sight / sound (particularly goshawk prey species, predators, and/or competitors)
  • Based in the lower mainland area
Position details:
Start date TBD, but approximately May 23, 2017. Accommodations are not provided in the lower mainland. A camping per diem will be provided for days spent in the back country. Survey and safety gear will be provided, but candidates are expected to have their own personal gear for camping and conducting the field work (including caulk boots). The position is for approximately 12-15 weeks of full time field work (contingent upon funding), though the nature of the work is weather dependent and requires scheduling flexibility and complete availability on the part of the applicant. Successful candidate(s) can expect to work in pairs and will experience an intense training period during initial surveys. Field teams must be available for a multi-day boat trip scheduled in mid-July (TBD). There will be approximately 3 weeks of pre- and/or post-field office time to complete field preparation, training, data management and reporting tasks.


Rate of Pay:
$18.00/hr for Field Technicians, $23-25/hr for Crew Leader, contingent upon experience/qualifications.
