Description:

The Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University is seeking a highly motivated and talented post-doctoral research associate to continue our long-term Lesser Prairie-Chicken research program. The post-doctoral position will have two components: one field season, conducted in Bailey and Cochran Counties, Texas, and Chaves County, New Mexico, and a lab component located at the Texas Tech Campus in Lubbock, Texas. The field research portion will be conducted in collaboration with colleagues from the Bureau of Land Management in New Mexico, New Mexico Game and Fish, Center of Excellence, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Lesser Prairie-Chicken Initiative, and Pheasants Forever. The selected post-doc will be expected to develop and focus their program on a serological survey of macroparasitic, microparasitic, non-infectious diseases with implications toward climate change and disease-risk modeling for the species. We have collected blood and demographic data from numerous lesser prairie-chickens as part of a long-term research program on the species. The post-doc will be expected to coordinate trapping efforts with collaborators and graduate students to collect additional data from early February through Mid-May, 2018. The position will pay $45,000 /year (salary negations are allowed depending upon experience and budget flexibility) and will include insurance and will last for 1 calendar year.

 

Candidates must have a Ph.D.; preferably in Wildlife Ecology/Management or Biological Sciences, with emphasis in disease ecology and quantitative modeling, and a valid U.S. driver’s license. Applicants who have prior experience with field research and disease ecology, a sense of humor, are willing to combine numerous data sets from >15 years of study on the species, and can produce results with clear, tangible management recommendations will be given preference. The selected applicant will be expected to present results at professional conferences, publish numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications, and prepare project reports and write additional grant proposals. Applicants must be willing to stay on as a post-doctoral research associate for one-full calendar year upon hire.
