Job Description
Purpose of Position:
Why does the job exist?

This position will exercise statewide responsibility for birds in New Mexico with an emphasis on non-game species. This position is central to the overall mission of the state wildlife agency.


How does it get done?
This position will implement the State Wildlife Action Plan as it relates to birds in New Mexico; research, monitor, and manage rare/declining species; participate on recovery teams and similar task forces; prepare agency positions regarding bird conservation issues; grant and contract development and administration; federal aid responsibility for bird projects; prepare publications technical reports, and presentations for state, national, and international audiences; organize and coordinate statewide cooperative programs for bird conservation with diverse partners and stakeholders.


Who are the customers?
This position will serve the people of New Mexico, agency staff, collaborator and cooperator staff, academic, professional, and avocational ornithologists with interest in New Mexico's birds.


The Ideal Candidate:
The Ideal candidate has experience in:

  • Ornithological, including capturing, marking, handling, and re-sighting birds as well as identifying birds by both sight and sound.
  • Ornithological study design and implementation.
  • Conducting quantitative/statistical analysis to derive abundance/density estimates, survival rates, habitat selection, and other metrics..
  • Conducting avian surveys (including point-counts) in a manner that allows for the estimation of detection probability.
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within twp weeks of closing date.


This position is a Pay Band 65.
Classification Description: Zoologist & Wildlife Biologist Advanced
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology, fisheries science/management, wildlife science/management, animal science, forestry, ecology or similar related natural resource degree and two (2) years directly related work experience.


Employment Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office and field setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, significant walking and reaching may be required. Incumbent will spend extended periods traveling to various locations around the state; hike and work for extended periods at high elevations; drive 4-wheel drive vehicles over highways, primitive roads, and narrow mountainous roads; trailering "gooseneck" and bumper hitch trailers; will utilize GPS units, GIS software, bird band reporting software, bird banding equipment, radio telemetry, satellite telemetry, cameras, spotting scopes, binoculars, other ocular environmental measuring instruments, scales, morphometric measuring devices, capture equipment such as: mist nets, walk in traps, drop nets, potter traps, bal chatri traps, , bow net traps, funnel traps, swim in traps, laboratory items, and construction tools.
