Agency University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, Department of Forestry, Wildlife & Fisheries Location Nashville, TN Job Category Faculty Appointments Salary Pay Grade 47 Last Date to Apply 07/31/2017 Website https://webapps.utk....b.aspx?ID=22293 Description The Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries (FWF) at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture invites applications for a 12-month non-tenure-track faculty position as an Extension Assistant Professor of Wildlife Health to support and collaborate with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). This position will be 100% extension; however, participation in applied research studies is expected. This position will be located at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture Central Region Extension office in Nashville, Tennessee. This is a 5-year position, dependent upon the availability of funding, with the possibility of additional renewal. The individual must be committed to excellence in service within the field of wildlife veterinary medicine. The candidate’s expertise should complement the Department’s existing programs and fulfill the wildlife veterinary needs of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

 

Expectations of the position will include engagement in university and professional service activities and a commitment to the Land Grant University mission of teaching, research and outreach and to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The person hired primarily will be responsible for outreach by delivering educational programs to both public and professional audiences in Tennessee and beyond, and to provide technical guidance to TWRA wildlife disease programs. The candidate will be expected to
• Develop and lead statewide programs for the detection, prevention, control, and management of emerging and known diseases occurring in avian and mammalian wildlife populations (e.g., chronic wasting disease, hemorrhagic disease, avian influenza, white-nose syndrome, swine brucellosis, rabies and other emerging or re-emerging diseases).
• Address local, state, and regional issues and concerns related to the juncture of wildlife, domestic animal, and human health (One Health) as they relate to the welfare of wildlife populations.
• Serve as the TWRA point of contact and spokesperson for wildlife health issues.
• Develop and lead training programs for TWRA personnel, UT Extension Agents and Specialists, and when appropriate, University of Tennessee students, faculty, and staff.
• Develop and lead educational programs for the general public.
• Work as a member of interdisciplinary teams with UT Extension Agents and Specialists and serve as a liaison to other stakeholders including veterinarians, community and environmental groups, and others working with domestic animals (livestock), wildlife, and people as related to the welfare of wildlife populations. Qualifications Required qualifications include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an AVMA accredited institution completed prior to the position start date; excellence in written and oral communication skills; licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in Tennessee or ability to obtain a license in the first 6 months of employment; must hold or be eligible to hold a DEA Controlled Substance Registration Certificate; and must have or qualify for USDA accreditation. Ability and willingness to meet travel requirements. Must be willing to work on behalf of an agency that manages wildlife for hunting as well as for ecological values.

 

Additional desired qualifications include The Wildlife Society’s Certification as a Wildlife Biologist (AWB®, CWB®, or eligibility), a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, natural resources management or a related field; specialty or graduate training in wildlife disease, pathology, wildlife management, ecology or closely related field; experience in diagnostics, pathology, epidemiology, disease ecology, public health or wildlife management.
