Position Summary:

 

The Department of Wildland Resources and the Ecology Center invite applications for a full-time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position in movement ecology. The position, to be filled at the Assistant Professor level, will be 50% research, 40% teaching, and 10% service.
The appointed faculty member will be expected to develop an externally-funded research program that achieves an international reputation for research and graduate training in the field of movement ecology in the terrestrial environment. Research areas and skills of particular interest to the Department include, but are not limited to: dispersal and migration of organisms as individuals and in groups; movement behavior; invasion ecology; disease ecology; population and community ecology; analysis and management of biotelemetry data; habitat choice and resource selection; mark-recapture techniques; etc.
Fundamental to this position is working across disciplinary and institutional boundaries and collaborating with federal and state agencies. The appointed faculty member will mentor and advise graduate students and post-doctoral researchers from diverse backgrounds, as well as teach courses (potentially online) to undergraduate and graduate students within the area of expertise as allocated by the Department Head.
A candidate's expertise should complement existing strengths in the Quinney College of Natural Resources and the Ecology Center. Through collaborations with faculty and extension personnel, the appointed faculty member will become a key player in the highly productive team of ecologists at Utah State University. We are interested in applicants who can prosper within a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment of physical, life, and social scientists.

Utah State University is a public land-grant research and teaching institution founded in 1888. The Department of Wildland Resources, in the Quinney College of Natural Resources, conducts research and educates students and the public about the ecology and management of wildlife, rangelands, and forests, and about conservation and restoration ecology. The department is partially supported by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station and the USU Ecology Center. It has several Extension-supported faculty, several faculty who are federal or state collaborators (with the USGS Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Unit, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, USDA Wildlife Services, U.S. Forest Service, and USDA Agricultural Research Services), and many supporting facilities and laboratories. Many opportunities for collaborations exist within the department, college, and across campus.

Qualifications:

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned Ph.D. in fields such as, but not limited to, ecology, zoology, wildlife biology, environmental sciences, geography
  • Demonstration of collegiality among peers and constituents
  • Evidence of established or emerging research stream(s) with publication potential
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching, research or creative endeavors, extension, service, or other qualifying work
  • Highly effective communication skills, including listening, writing, and speaking
  • Willingness to take on responsibilities and challenges
  • Willingness to accept some departmental and college service assignments
  • Ability to explain complex concepts in an understandable way
  • Ability to serve as a mentor, advisor and role model to students
  • Ability to work productively and cooperatively with colleagues
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • A strong commitment to stay current and professionally or academically qualified depending on appointment
  • Experience in conducting research on movement ecology with a corresponding publication record.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to articulate science inside and outside the classroom to diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
Relevant postdoctoral experience will be a distinct advantage. With USU being a land-grant institution, we are especially interested in applicants with an expressed interest in conducting a portion of their research in Utah or nearby in the Intermountain West. Weight will be added to the evaluation of applicants with experience in applying science to finding solutions for management problems.
