I am looking for 2 volunteer field assistants to help with field research on nesting Procellariiform seabirds and to conduct island habitat surveys in Northern New Zealand.
Dates: mid-January to late February. Exact dates are weather-dependent.
Overall duties include:
-Monitoring study burrows of three target species
-Vegetation and burrow occupancy surveys
-Assistance packing food/gear, camp chores, data entry, and site/gear clean-up
Work schedules will vary. Nesting chronology will dictate diurnal/nocturnal work, and field activities are weather-dependent.
Compensation for travel to/from New Zealand is not available, so ideal applicants will be New Zealand residents. Food and housing during fieldwork will be provided. Applicants should be comfortable working in a steep and wet environment. Applicants must be comfortable living at an isolated island with small research teams and be able to keep a positive attitude through long work days with challenging conditions. Previous field experience, particularly with handling and working with birds, is highly desired.
To apply: Please send a brief cover letter, 2 page CV/resume highlighting previous relevant field research experience, and contact information for two references to Christy Wails (email@example.com) by 24 December 2018. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and the position will be closed as candidates are identified. Please include “Seabird volunteer application” in the subject line.
