    FIELD ASSISTANT needed 1 April through 1 July, 2019 to assist with the capture of migratory songbirds in urban/suburban areas of Washington DC.  Birds captured will be part of an exciting new exhibit called “Experience Migration” which unites The Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the National Zoo in Washington, DC.   Learning goals include advancement of the qualifications, duties, collaborative skills and knowledge required for success in an accredited zoological facility. 

    This project will hone skills in abilities to capture, color-band, and measure birds unassisted in urban/suburban settings and parks.  By the end of the project, the intern will be able to place mist nets, capture, band, measure, body score, age, and sex focal bird species.  In addition, they will have experience in the welfare of birds within a captive setting.  The intern will assist with data entry and process documentation.  The banding will take place from early morning onward up to 6 days per week carrying out a wide variety of field tasks in humid conditions. 

    Applicants must have a valid US drivers license and may be required to use their own a vehicle and pay for their own gas.  Stipend $1800/month.
