The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is hiring a 40 hour per week quantitative ecologist/statistician in St. Petersburg, FL as a member of the Center for Biostatistics and Modeling. The candidate will work on a variety of conservation-related projects and provide statistical consulting services to agency staff in a unique and rewarding collaborative environment. Consulting activities range from designing research studies to analyzing data to co-authoring manuscripts and include areas such as simple linear modeling, modeling population dynamics, estimating abundance, and assessing the impact of management actions on habitats. One of the main duties of this position is to conduct habitat suitability and population dynamics modeling for marine species. This position includes full health and retirement benefits at an annual salary of $53,000 (candidates should note there is no personal income tax in the State of Florida). At least a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in statistics or one of the natural sciences with demonstrable proficiency in quantitative ecology.
Candidates may be given preference if they have a doctorate from an accredited college or university in statistics or one of the natural sciences with demonstrable proficiency in quantitative ecology.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
· Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
· Must be able to understand and appreciate research problems from the perspective of a biologist or resource manager
· Must be able to produce graphics and summarize analytical results in a manner that is understandable to biologists
· Must have working knowledge in the areas of experimental design, linear models, generalized linear models, mixed effect (hierarchical) models, generalized additive models, and spatial statistics
· Working knowledge in structural equation modeling, community ecology, and structured decision making is preferred
· Must have a working knowledge of GIS concepts; experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and ESRI software preferred
· Must be proficient at programming in either SAS or R
· Must be able to work independently to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments
· Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with research staff, including personnel stationed at field offices throughout the state of Florida
· Must be able to represent research results at professional meetings and build and maintain productive relationships with agency partners
