Bob pursued his love of nature all his life. A grandson of immigrants from Odessa, Russia, he was the first in his family to go to college. He received a bachelors and a masters degree in Biology from Wayne State University in Detroit, where he assisted in field studies of birds and amphibians. In 1969 he obtained a Ph.D. in zoology at UC Berkeley, and continued to research the evolution and morphology of birds over the course of his professional career. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Hawaii he studied endemic Hawaiian honeycreepers and published the definitive monogram on their origin. He went on to the University of Pittsburgh as faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences, and remained there for 30 years. During this time he advised 11 graduate students and mentored undergraduates, reaching the rank of Full Professor. Also on staff at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, he authored many peer-reviewed, scientific papers, book chapters and reviews. Dr. Raikow succumbed to Parkinson's disease peacefully at home on April 4, 2012. He is survived by his wife Radmila of 47 years, his sisters, Marion and Barbara, his children, David and Steven, and his grandchildren Samantha, Sofia, Ian, Cole, and Torin.
