Dear AOU Members:

Here's an update on the AOU annual meeting in Jacksonville in July (see details on the meeting web site at http://www.birdmeetings.org/aou2011/). Note the abstract submission deadline is May 1, and the registration rates begin changing on June 26th. I encourage you to take advantage of the cheaper early registration rates, and the availability of rooms in the meeting hotel.

Scientific Program:
Currently we have three plenary speakers, four symposia and two workshops confirmed for the scientific program. Note titles are informative but not set in stone at the moment. Plenaries: Dustin Rubenstein: Role of spatiotemporal environmental variation in the evolution and maintenance of cooperative breeding and family-living in birds. Craig Benkman, processes driving the evolution, diversification and devliens of crossbills Robb Brumfield-title TBA.

Symposia:
Jennifer Seavey, "A no-analog future for birds in a changing climate?" Wesley M. Hochachka and Benjamin Zuckerberg, "Citizen Science as a Tool for Ecological Research" John Faaborg, David King and Amanda Rodewald, "Post-fledgling use of second-growth vegetation by forest-breeding migratory birds" John Fitzpatrick and Reed Bowman, "Conservation Biology of the Florida Scrub-Jay: Challenges to Saving Florida's Unique Bird"

Workshops:
Coleen McLinn, "Teaching with Cutting-edge Bird data" Robert Fletcher, "Predicting and mapping avian distributions: recent advances and future challenges"

Hotel and lodging:
The four-star Hyatt Regency in Jacksonville, Florida is the venue for this meeting. Rooms are $109 single or double occupancy nightly. We strongly encourage members to stay at the Hyatt both because it's a good deal and because cheaper hotels are generally quite distant from the meeting site.

Food:
Although there are two restaurants in the hotel, food is generally expensive there. We plan to offer affordable grab-and-go buffet breakfasts and lunches similar to those at the San Diego meeting. A large complex of restaurants and shops is a five-minute walk from the hotel, and local free trolleys can carry members to other local restaurants and vendors.

Social Events:
In addition to the traditional Fellows Dinner, we will have social events each evening for all members, including an Icebreaker Social (Tuesday), Poster session social (Wednesday), Quiz Bowl (Thursday) and Awards Banquet (Friday). We will also offer the Ostrich All-out Uproar 5k run, and Canoe races immediately outside the hotel on the St. Johns River on Thursday morning and midday, respectively.

Field Trips:
We are currently planning morning field trips to various marsh, scrub and coastal locations close to the meeting site. Post-meeting field trips will focus on three areas: Longleaf Pine Specialists, Pelagic Birds of the Gulf Stream, and Marsh and Coastal Breeding Birds. All trips will be led by local experts.

Looking forward to seeing you in Jacksonville!
