Site Update: December 2011

Posted by Chris Merkord , in Updates 05 December 2011 · 1,704 views

We underwent a minor site update this morning, this one aimed at resolving a few linger bugs from our last major update.

Among other things, important bugs resolved with this update include the follow:
  • Some members were not receiving email notifications, even though they were "Following" a forum and had checked "Email" in their Notification Options.
  • The tagging functionality was not working as it should have. Now that it's fixed, when you click on a "tag" on a forum topic, you will be shown a list of other forum topics with the same tag. Although the tagging functionality is not widely used on the site yet, we plan to ramp up its use over time, including the release of a blog entry explaining how tagging works.
One new feature was also added in this update:
  • HTML emails; from now on, the emails you receive from OE should be in HTML format, with a plain text alternative so that if the email client doesn't support HTML then the email can still be read.

If you notice any errors introduced by this update, or if you continue not to receive notifications even though you are signed up to do so, please reply to this blog entry or let me know directly (click on my name above for email/PM options).

One bug I've found caused by this update is that many of the past imported blog entries (e.g. Cornell's Round Robin, ABC's Bird News Network) have some messed up formatting now, with lots of HTML code showing. We'll keep our eyes on the situation to see if this will be a problem going forward. Unless someone wants to volunteer to clean up the past entries, they'll stay as they are for now.
